A group of Myanmar nuns are focusing their pastoral efforts on often-neglected children suffering from HIV/AIDS. Three Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition in Kalay work with a ten-member team to assist 26 orphan vulnerable children (OVC) infected with the HIV virus by their parents. At their “Shelter of Charity” center, the sisters assist with nutrition, school and tuition fees, medicine and even funeral expenses. Ten children and two adults living with HIV/AIDS also stay at the center, which was founded in 2007, on land donated by Bishop Mang Thang of Hakha Diocese, Chin state.

Asia News - Kalay - With enthusiasm and determination, the new bishop of the new diocese of Kalay, Mgr. Felix Lian Khen Thang, wants to help the ethnic Chin people – the majority in the area - to remain and not emigrate. In a conversation with AsiaNews he stresses that to achieve this greater care must be given to the environment (the forest) where the Chin live and support evangelization with human development through education projects and cooperatives.

Renovations underway at St Mary’s Cathedral

A worker begins renovation work at St Mary’s Cathedral in Yangon last month.

MAJOR renovations got underway earlier this month at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in downtown Yangon, under the guidance of Archbishop Charles Bo of the Yangon Archdiocese.

A spokesperson from the cathedral’s Parish Pastoral Council told The Myanmar Times that renovations would be carried out gradually, with the aim of completing work before the church’s 100-year anniversary is celebrated on December 8, 2011.

“We’ve been preparing for renovations for the past two years, and early this month we started installing new stained glass windows. Our aim is to have all the windows in place by next May,” he said.

Calgary, May 24, 2010 (zoage.com): The Vatican Radio reported on May 22, 2010, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI erected Kalay diocese from territory that used to be part of the Hakha Diocese in Myanmar. The Pontiff also appointed His Excellency Bishop Felix Lian Khen Thang as the first bishop of the new diocese.

Archbishop recalls people's unity, compassion in wake of Nargis
YANGON : Archbishop Charles Maung Bo of Yangon recalls how people from various religions rushed to each other's aid when Cyclone Nargis struck a year ago. Speaking at a May 2 interreligious prayer service at St. Peter's Cathedral in Pathein, to commemorate the first anniversary of the disaster, he noted how "Buddhist monks swam through violent waves to save Christian women while the Christian groups reached out to the Buddhist villages with emergency supplies."
